The loyalty of a friend, the dedication of a teacher, and the affection of parents will undoubtedly influence the qualities I will strive for in myself. My goal is complex and unique, but certain characteristics of the people around me are bound to influence me. There is nobody else in the world with all my characteristic strengths and weaknesses, so why should I change myself to fit someone else's mold? I have an image of the character I will have when I am older, and I work towards this in my own way.

My role model is a person I can believe in, a person whose expectations I can live up to. I think teenagers should pursue more positive role models that they will benefit from for more than a short time. Most feel that they have to dress fashionably to be popular. The main quality teenagers look for in a role model is fashion. Most hustlers have cars and expensive outfits accented with various amounts of gold and other fine jewels. These "hustlers," as they are sometimes called, set the fashion trends for teenagers today. The individuals that teenagers admire most are the drug dealers. They admire people who are widely popular because they would like to be, too. In general, teens (and adults) admire people who they think live better lives than they do. What they do is supposed to be fun, even though it's hard, and not boring, useless and monotonous like many jobs and and most school classes. Athletes also don't have a real "job" in the true sense of trhe word. Athletes can do things most teens can't but wish they could. Teens admire athletes because of their physical abilities and the adoration they often receive. Teens admire actors because they can do things in movies that most people only dream about. Famous musicians and actors are very wealthy, live in luxurious estates, do no work and are usually surrounded by beautiful women. Teenagers often look up to entertainers because of their easy, glamorous lifestyles. There are many reasons teens look up to these people. I guess it's because the leaders of yesterday had to really struggle to hold a place in history. Washington and George Washington Carver.Īlthough we have many black role models today, like Jesse Jackson, we don't seem to recognize them as much. They look to the past, to Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Booker T. I think that teenagers today admire the black achievers of yesterday. I am truly lucky to have a role model like my mother! RUSSETTE KIRKPATRICK Notre Dame If all teenagers could have parents like I have, the novelty of drugs would not even be intriguing. Growing up in a world of drugs and murder as we are, I thank God every day for my mother who instills dreams that are real in me. It is the father who goes out every day to one or even two jobs to see that his family can eat and sleep with shelter over their heads. This "role model" is the mother who constantly encourages you to attend school because she loves you enough to motivate you to strive in the pursuit of excellence. The youth of today look to the parents to be strong role models in their lives. Who is the foundation beneath our moral values and beliefs? Our parents. Where does our admiration begin? In the home. The models are clearly there, and it is quite evident that many of our youth only wish to travel the various roads in crime open to them, roads that all lead to the same place. On television shows like "Miami Vice," you can see the most lavish of mansions owned by a "kingpin" of the drug world. They are the only people who can parade through the slums in the most expensive attire on the market. However, who do you know that is rich? You will find that, for the most part, the only apparently rich people who come in frequent contact with the youth of Washington are drug dealers - the slime recognized as "hustlers." They are the only elite who drive through the projects in $50,000 automobiles. Wealth is a common goal and it is essentially a good goal. Day to day we see how wonderful it is to be rich. To be wealthy and well-known is the ideal that is pumped into the minds of youths through the media. The most powerful of these are the rich and famous. Who are the individuals teenagers admire most and why? What are the qualities teenagers look for in role models today?Ī role model can have a powerful effect on a child, either negatively or positively.
